F1 Sprint Returns: What You Need to Know About the Exciting Race Format

The Sprint: A Short and Intense Race

The F1 Sprint is a short and intense race, covering approximately 100km, about one-third of a typical Grand Prix distance. It typically lasts around 30 minutes and is designed to provide additional excitement and action during a Grand Prix weekend.

F1 Sprint Format

The F1 Sprint format was introduced in 2021 as a way to enhance the Grand Prix weekend experience. It involves an additional race on Saturday, which determines the starting grid for the main Grand Prix on Sunday. The sprint race is shorter than the Grand Prix and features a reverse grid, with the slowest qualifiers starting in front. Points are awarded to the top finishers in the sprint race, and the winner takes the pole position for the Grand Prix.

In 2023, there will be six F1 Sprint events, starting with this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The other sprint races will be held at the following Grands Prix:

  • Austrian Grand Prix
  • Belgian Grand Prix
  • Dutch Grand Prix
  • Italian Grand Prix
  • United States Grand Prix
